Why Preplanning

Prearrangement, a dignified way to preplan your cremation and burial services.

PRO'S AND CON'S OF PRE-PLANNING FUNERAL WISHES.

We think that there are important considerations that one should make before pre-planning. Pre-arrangements may remove some of the decision making process from the family / survivors at the time of death. This may not be completely helpful to them for coping. They may need to be involved or at least have input into decisions that may affect them for years.

Survivors are the "walking wounded." The more we love the more we hurt when someone we love dies.

By making decisions about funeral arrangements, one is confirming reality. Psychologists say that this helps to process grief and go forward. One is empowered to make decisions rather than just feeling defeated by death.

Therefore, we suggest that you include in your pre arranged wishes this sentence, "If my family wishes to adjust these arrangements to meet their needs at the time of my death they have my permission."

The advantage of pre-planning is the peace of mind in knowing that important decisions would be looked after. You can always revise your plans at any time.

WHY NOT PRE-PAY A FUNERAL?

1) Although you may feel pressured to pre-pay funeral expenses, for example, by insurance companies or cemeteries, it might not always be your best financial decision at the time. At MCCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME we do not sell insurance to fund pre-payment, or pressure you in any way, or take any commissions.

2) Why wouldn't you pre-pay your funeral? First you are taking your hard earned after tax dollar out of your pocket now to pre-pay funeral arrangements. If you consider that upon your death your assets may be sold, or there is insurance and you have paid into the Canada Pension Plan which would provide a Death Benefit, there would be more than adequate funds to look after final costs. Take your grandchildren on a vacation or give them some of their inheritance now so that you may enjoy it together. You can always pre-pay at any time, perhaps when your home is sold and you move into rental accommodation.

WHY PRE-PAY?

  1. Inflation Protection by Guaranteed Price:

When your funeral arrangements at MCCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME are pre-paid in full, we guarantee that no matter how many years go by between pre-payment and death there will be no extra charges made for the items pre-paid, excluding any taxes imposed by the government.

  2. It's still your money:

One hundred percent of your money is placed in a trust account in your name and can be redeemed by you at any time with earned interest. Unlike insurance, it's still your money.

  3. Tax Free Interest:

While in the account, you don't pay taxes on the interest earned. The interest offsets inflationary costs of the funeral details. Any overage is refunded to the estate.

  4. No Financial Drain on The Estate:

Your family / estate doesn't need to look after costs at the time. The pre-paid items are covered immediately.
